Law Enforcement Authority & Jurisdiction

Law Enforcement Officers (Police Officers) of the University Police Department receive their police authority from Article 51.203, Texas Education Code. This statute was passed in 1969 and amended in 1987 by the Texas Legislature.  Under this act, Officers commissioned by the University of Texas System Board of Regents have full law enforcement authority.  Their jurisdiction includes the entire county where property is located, owned, leased, rented, or otherwise controlled by the University.  UTHSCSA Police Officers are licensed, as are all other Police Officers of this state, by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) upon meeting the required minimum standards and completing the Basic Police Officers Training Courses conducted by the University of Texas System Police at their Academy in Austin.
The department's jurisdiction responsibilities include all three campuses of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio located at 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, 8407 Floyd Curl Drive, and the Institute of Biotechnology, 15335 Lamda Drive; The Texas Research Park; numerous leased office spaces adjacent to the campuses and downtown; and by contract, The Texas Research Park consisting of 1,236 acres.
